GENOS LLC is seeking a Bioinformatics Research Assistant for a 6-month co-op with a stipend of $14k to support the execution of computational projects in genomics, molecular modeling, and translational studies. This role is ideal for a technically capable and intellectually curious individual looking to apply their bioinformatics skills into commercial technology research projects. You will assist the Founder in preparing, analyzing, and interpreting datasets from internal R&D projects for early-stage biodata management and follow-on algorithmic tool development. Depending on the company load, needs and skill level, you may also contribute to outbound sales and client projects.

Important: The candidate must be within one year of attaining a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a STEM, business, or related field. (In other words, if you just graduated this Summer 2025, then you qualify for the role.)

Program Sponsorship (JuvEmpleo)

This Co-Op role is sponsored by the Department of Economic Development and Commerce of Puerto Rico (DDEC) through the JuvEmpleo youth employment program. The ideal time to enroll is October of each year, when program funds are typically approved. Additional positions may be approved depending on availability and government objectives. Stipend and duration align with JuvEmpleo parameters ($15/hr, up to 950 hours over approximately 6 months).

GENOS LLC is a bioinformatics contract research organization (CRO) providing computational solutions for biotech companies and research institutions. Our work spans omics data analysis, molecular dynamics, and translational studies. Based in Puerto Rico, we serve both local clients and U.S. mainland institutions by enabling research teams to manage and interpret complex biological data efficiently.

Role Description

As a Bioinformatics Research Assistant, you will work under direct supervision of the Founder to process and analyze biological datasets and generate interpretable outputs for internal R&D projects. You will also help document workflows, contribute to version-controlled codebases, and support data quality assurance. Although this is primarily a deep technical research-facing role, you may opt-in to contribute additional time for client-facing projects for additional pay.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct supervised data analysis for internal research projects related to cancer & metabolism.
  • Assist with pipeline execution, debugging, and optimization.
  • Support data cleaning, annotation, visualization, and interpretation.
  • Maintain clear and organized documentation for internal use.
  • Contribute to reproducibility and version control using Git-based tools.
  • Programmatically prepare and discuss reports and figures using custom markdown tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's-level coursework in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, or related fields.
  • (Important) The candidate must be within one year of attaining the Bachelor's or Master's degree. (In other words, if you just graduated this Summer 2025 or are now in your final academic semester, then you qualify for the co-op program.)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in R, Python, or similar scripting languages.
  • Familiarity with common bioinformatics tools and file formats (FASTQ, BAM, VCF, etc.).
  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments and using command-line tools.
  • Exposure to version control systems like Git/GitHub.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation habits, and scientific curiosity.
  • (Preferred) Familiarity with at least one analysis domain: differential expression, pathway enrichment, molecular docking, etc.
  • (Preferred) Familiarity with Agentic coding tools like Github Copilot, Cursor, & OpenAi Codex

Compensation and Opportunity

  • $14,250 for 6 months of work ($15/hr 40FTE).
